So….February is upon us. I don’t know about you but I have
had way too many organizing tips and suggestions coming at me. GO month has
come and gone…are you still GOing? Or have you stopped in your tracks? You
can’t look anywhere and not see something about getting organized for 2013. How is it feeling for you? I never think of myself as being rebellious,
but frankly, all this advice makes me want to run away to China.
In the design world we tend to look at Organizing in the
form of editing (not anything you can take too personally). Too much stuff? Just
move or remove some of it.
In the Feng Shui world we look at Organizing or clearing
clutter as the fact that your possessions are “talking to you”. You may not
have heard them, but I can assure you they are. Like that sweater you bought on
sale that was not quite the best color for you, or that lamp that you inherited
from your aunt that really isn’t your style. Or that dried flower arrangement
that has been sitting in your dining room covered with dust. Every time you
look at something, it has its own story. The point is, if a thing is saying
something less than excellent to you (I’m broken, I’m dusty, I’m slightly
wrong) you should ban it from your presence. This in turn will keep “Ch’i“, or
energy, flowing in you and around your lovely home. If you edit using the “story”
method, you will end up being surrounded only by things that you love! This
should give you a tremendous boost of energy.
February is a favorite month of mine – the
possibility of a big snow storm and cold temperatures! Having to stay inside is
great for editing, organizing, or just lying around trying to decide if your
possessions are really talking to you. You’ll finally have more time to do
that. The days are getting longer and the sun is a bit stronger. The countdown
to Spring has begun!
